Let’s Hook Up!: A peek at the free-wheelin’ RV community

Dillon Hansen and his now-business partner Jon Moran took off in a camper van for a few weeks in 2013 to travel around the South Island of New Zealand.

It was a life-changing trip that caused a domino effect: Hansen quit his job in tech sales in 2014, Moran left his job in health care administration in 2015, and the two launched Native Campervans, which opened a Phoenix office in October.

“When we started, van life was not yet a social media phenomenon,” Hansen says.

According to The Dyrt, more than 35 million Americans camped in an RV in 2022 and an estimated 80-plus million campers were expected to camp in the Unite States in 2023, and more than 50% of them are 55 and older.

“Van travel is my favorite thing in the world,” Hansen says. “It means freedom and simplicity. The van is 18 feet in length, which is comparable to an SUV.”

The camper van comes with a kitchen, refrigerator, and 24-hour roadside assistance, and the only restrictions are traveling to Mexico and Burning Man.

In 2015, Kristine and Brandon Stevens started their RV adventures with a Class A diesel motorhome. A couple of years ago, they switched to a Jayco North Point fifth wheel pulled by a Dodge Ram 2500. . . .

Mon Ami, which opened in May on Ocean Avenue and features a menu inspired by countries by the Mediterranean Sea, launched a new happy hour menu on Jan. 9.

“We also wanted to test some new food and cocktail items that are getting some great feedback in the short time we have launched our happy hour menu. The PCH Burger and Mallorca Mule are the initial winners of the bunch thus far.” …

Coffee Commissary rolled out its full menu at its first full-service café on the westside in Del Rey.

“We have coffee bars in Palms and Santa Monica, but this is our first kitchen on the westside,” said Eric Peters,
president of Coffee Commissary.

“Whenever we choose a neighborhood, we always consider how we can contribute to that community by creating a safe space for residents to gather and network. Del Rey is a such a beautiful and rich multigenerational neighborhood that we felt would benefit from a space like that.”

According to Peters, Coffee Commissary launched its first coffee bar on Fairfax in 2009. At the time, specialty coffee was emerging in Los Angeles. They were the first specialty coffee shop in West Hollywood, and “arguably the first multi-roaster concept in Los Angeles,” Peters said. …

“It’s silly, but when all three cousins are at an opening, we love to watch people’s reactions when we introduce ourselves,” Tsigaris said.

“One at a time, we’ll say, ‘Hi, my name is Nick,’ and the reactions we get from people when they think we are messing with them will never get old.” …
